Newsletter #1 - January 2025

Happy New Year! We hope you were able to rest, rejuvenate, and enjoy your community over the holidays. At Parents of EUSD, we took a little break from posting after the election but we haven’t stopped working to advocate for our children, teachers, staff, and school district. And, there’s no better time to get involved in the local issues that affect us and our community directly.

If you read one thing, let it be…ACTION ITEMS!

  • Forward this email on to your friends and neighbors and ask them to sign up - we are stronger together! Or, send us a friend or two who might be aligned with us!

  • Let us know any questions you have about our district, or public information in general. (We plan to nerd out and dig for answers to your questions!)

  • Learn more about the new report cards coming out next week.

  • Watch our school board meeting recaps from PoE contributors — we’ll post one of these after every board meeting to keep you up to date:

  • Follow @parentsofeusd on Instagram.

If you’re still reading, we thought some introductions would be in order.

Who is Parents of EUSD (aka “Poe”)?

PoE is a group of community members in the Encinitas Union School District. We are district alumni, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends, allies, and more. We came together in the lead up to the 2024 election because we were alarmed at some of the discriminatory and abusive rhetoric we had witnessed at school board meetings and promoted by a candidate running for school board. Since then, we’ve developed into a grassroots organization with the mission of uniting neighbors to protect high-quality public education that inspires world-ready learners. In the fall of 2024, we felt like we were scrambling to organize in the face of some fringe candidates trying to get on our local school board. The hope is that–no matter what comes our way in 2026–we are prepared and have a strong, connected community.

How did we get your email address?

Good question! You were either one of the 350+ signers of our letter to the editor in the Coast News (thank you!!), you contacted us and asked to get more involved, or one of your friends gave us your information because they thought you’d be interested in working with us to protect public education in our district. We will never share our email distribution list.

What does PoE do?

We are working locally to strengthen our community and to foster a school district where all students, teachers, and staff can thrive. And, we want to help people who want to be informed, stay informed. To this end, we’re committed to:

  • Keeping you up to date with all things EUSD: We’ll attend school board meetings and send out recaps, highlight things to celebrate in the district, and alert you to action items.

  • Fostering community among families and allies in our district: We’ll arrange periodic family-friendly meetups and ask for your input about what is important about public education to you.

  • Listening, reading, and sharing: We’ll curate and distribute parenting and education-related resources, like this Guardian report “US Public Schools Burned Up Nearly $3.2bn Fending Off Rightwing Culture Attacks” and this podcast episode about kids sports. You can see an archive of these in our Resource Corner on the PoE website.

  • Supporting our schools and educators: We’ll alert you to opportunities to help, provide input, and more..

We are glad you’re here! If you have interest in getting more involved with us, please reply here and we’d love to be in contact.

Stay engaged, EUSD,

Talitha Matlin, Parents of EUSD Outreach Committee Member and Park Dale Lane parent
